The Holy One wanted to make it very clear to Israel His plan to redeem fallen mankind would mean the death of the Messiah. We cannot save ourselves through good works.
Let's take a look at a specific portion of this Psalm to concentrate on its primary message at first. I refer to verses 12-18.
12 Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me.
13 They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.
16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; (Literally: (...and feet of me hands of me like the lion among them.)
17 I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me.
18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.
Hopefully, you could see the picture of Jesus in this Psalm even though it was written 900 years before God's word took on flesh to become our Savior.
There cannot be much doubt but that the one being crucified here was going to die. What is amazing is that the Psalmist is speaking of a crucifixion (we know by the description here it was a crucifixion) when this form of death was introduced much later by the Romans.
If you study the following verses that continue to speak of the one who was crucified, you notice there is something very amazing here. The Psalmist is talking about the crucified one as if he is alive again. "The nations of the world will turn to the Lord" describes what has been happening ever since the resurrection of Jesus.
27 All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord’S, And He rules over the nations.
29 All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive.
30 A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,
31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this.
No wonder Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 18:18-19, I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him. Though God acted out of pure love for His people by sending a perfect sacrifice, it would bring serious ramifications for anyone who dared reject this love gift.
Prayer: Father God, I come to your through Jesus, my Messiah, asking you to give me complete forgiveness of all my sins. Thank you Word of God for being willing to take on flesh in order to die for me. I pledge to you my heart, mind, soul and strength. Use me to serve you in your kingdom Amen.
